The Core Formula

Master this formula:

Drops = Carrier (ml) × Dilution (%) × 0.2

Or simply:

For 1% dilution: Carrier ml ÷ 5 = drops

Bath and Water Applications

Safe Bath Use

Essential oils don't mix with water—always disperse first!

MethodAmountHow To
In carrier oil4-6 drops in 1 tbsp carrierMix EOs in carrier, then add to bath
In bath gel4-6 drops in 1 tbsp unscented gelMix well before adding to water
Bath salts4-8 drops per 1/4 cup saltMix EOs with salt, dissolve in bath
Milk/cream4-6 drops in 1/4 cupFat disperses oils

Shower and Steam

MethodAmountHow To
Shower steamer15-20 drops per steamerRecipe-specific
Steam inhalation2-4 drops in bowlHot water, inhale with towel tent
Shower floor3-5 dropsAway from direct water flow

Compress Reference

TypeDropsInstructions
Warm compress3-5 dropsAdd to warm water, wring cloth, apply
Cold compress3-5 dropsAdd to cool water, wring cloth, apply
Hot compress2-4 dropsHot water, quick application

Note: Compresses aren't calculated as percentage—drops disperse in water and are applied via cloth.

Diffuser Guidelines

Not technically "dilution" but important reference:

Room SizeDropsDuration
Small (bathroom, car)2-4 drops15-30 min
Medium (bedroom)4-6 drops30-60 min
Large (living room)6-10 drops30-60 min
Very large (open plan)10-15 dropsIntermittent

Diffusing Safety:

  • 30-60 minutes on, 30-60 minutes off
  • Less for children, pets, sensitive individuals
  • Ensure ventilation
  • Don't diffuse continuously

Quick Mental Math

The Rule of 5 (for 1%)

  • Carrier ml ÷ 5 = drops for 1%
  • 5 ml = 1 drop
  • 10 ml = 2 drops
  • 25 ml = 5 drops

Scaling From 1%

  • 1% × 2 = 2%
  • 1% × 3 = 3%
  • 1% ÷ 2 = 0.5%
  • 1% × 5 = 5%

Common Calculations

30 ml carrier:

  • 0.5% = 3 drops
  • 1% = 6 drops
  • 2% = 12 drops
  • 3% = 18 drops

10 ml roller:

  • 1% = 2 drops
  • 2% = 4 drops
  • 3% = 6 drops
  • 5% = 10 drops

5 ml roller:

  • 2% = 2 drops
  • 4% = 4 drops
  • 5% = 5 drops

When to Dilute More

Reduce concentration by half (or more) for:

  • First-time users
  • Elderly individuals
  • Compromised immune systems
  • Damaged or broken skin
  • Very young children
  • Pregnancy and nursing
  • Chronic health conditions
  • Taking medications
  • History of allergies or sensitivities
  • Facial application
  • Mucous membrane proximity

Emergency Reference

If Skin Reaction Occurs

  1. Do NOT apply water (may drive oils deeper)
  2. Apply plain carrier oil liberally to area
  3. Gently wipe away with soft cloth
  4. Apply more carrier oil
  5. If reaction persists, seek medical attention

Signs of Over-Concentration

  • Redness beyond normal
  • Burning sensation
  • Itching
  • Skin rash or welts
  • Difficulty breathing (rare, serious)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does dilution reduce effectiveness? No. Proper dilution ensures safe skin application and can actually enhance absorption. Undiluted application risks sensitization, which can permanently prevent using that oil.

Can I use this chart for all oils? Most common oils, yes. Some potent oils require even lower dilutions—check the "Oils Requiring Lower Dilutions" section. When in doubt, research specific oils.

What if I can't get an exact drop count? Round down for safety. One drop less is always safer than one drop more.

How do I adjust for very thick oils? Warm thick oils (vetiver, myrrh) gently before dispensing. Thick oils may produce larger drops—use fewer if drops seem larger than normal.

Can I increase dilution if I don't feel effects? Gradually, within safe limits. Sometimes lower dilutions work better due to optimal skin absorption. More isn't always better.
